Oblivion Review

So now we’re finally here in April and Oblivion is finally out in cinemas! I have waited for months for this film to come out. Now I have been in two minds about this film since I saw the trailers, I believed it could either be really cool or pretty lame. I’ve been cautiously optimistic. I just want it to be a good and entertaining film because it has two of my favourite actors in it, Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. So is the film worth the wait or something you should pass on? Read on my review to find out.

The story synopsis for the film goes a little something this:

“One of the few remaining drone repairmen assigned to Earth, its surface devastated after decades of war with the alien Scavs, discovers a crashed spacecraft with contents that bring into question everything he believed about the war, and may even put the fate of mankind in his hands.”

I thought the plot for the film was pretty interesting. Even though the whole “post-apocalyptic Earth” thing has been done many times before this film’s story carried itself well and had me invested, also there was a lot of drama and emotional elements in some of the characters lives that I was not expecting to. The film does however lack a certain degree of originality as there were times where I made several references to film like Moon, 2001: A Space Odyssey Independence Day and Wall-E. Also there were story elements that I did see coming before the film presented them to me but for the most part I liked the story in this film I just wish the ending was a little more satisfying.

The characters in this film are pretty decent though the key performances that start out are Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough. Firstly let’s start with Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, Cruise was great. His performance was solid and engaging and you could see that he was haunted by his past and wanted to know more about Earth prior to the alien war. Jack, even though he repairs just repairs drones, patrol the skies and follows orders wants more and Cruise showed his acting skills well here. Plus the guy’s like 50 and yet he can run, gun and do all these action scenes which is bloody impressive, again I don’t like it when people hate on the guy when he puts so much effort into his work. The other great performance comes from Andrea Riseborough as Victoria Olsen. Riseborough was really great as the colleague of Jack who performed her duties and never asked questions about the past, there was many sides to this woman from her cute and flirty side to her affirmative side. There was a fair bit of emotional stuff for her character and Riseborough looked fabulous and acted very well against Cruise.

Also Melissa Leo as Sally was a performance that was could but also very scary too, Leo came across as so cold and non-human even when trying to be nice. And then there’s Olga Kurylenko as Julia Rusakova, she still looks beautiful these days and she served her purpose for the film giving emotion where possible, but I felt like her character could have done more and Kurylenko wasn’t as good as I hope she’d be. Now let’s talk about Morgan Freeman as Malcolm Beech, a resistance leader stationed on Earth. Freeman was his usual awesome self but was not in the film nearly as much as I would have hoped and was severely underwritten. The trailers made him seem like he had a massive part in the film but it’s actually smaller than Kurylenko’s. And lastly there’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Sykes, its funny, I can’t look at him without seeing Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones haha. But putting that fact aside he was alright but not in the film as much as I’d hoped.

As for the presentation, all I have to say is DAMN! The presentation is bloody awesome. The CGI and special effects were put to good use here, everything looked so incredibly detailed, vivid and beautiful despite the state of the planet. The action sequences were excellent and I also liked the art direction, the drones looked cool and the ship that Jack uses is also pretty awesome too. And then there’s the soundtrack M83 was great, it had a proper 80s vibe to it with the use of the instruments and I loved how loud and epic it sounded.

In conclusion Oblivion was pretty awesome. A lot of critics and audience members have bashed the film for the slower pace and lack of originality when compared to sci-fi films that preceded this one. However for me the story was surprisingly deep and intriguing, the cast was solid for the most part and presentation was top-class yo. If you’re a patient kind of film watcher and give this film a chance you’ll probably enjoy it.

Rating: 8/10 (Not perfect but definitely worth a watch!)

So what did you think of this latest sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise? Did you like it or dislike it? Whatever your thoughts lay them down below and I’ll catch y’all on the next review yo! 😀

Films to look out for in 2013 Part 2

Howdy ladies and gents and welcome to the part 2 of Films to look out for in 2013! If you haven’t seen the last part then click here in order to see my last list of films. Like the last blog post I’ll be listing a number of films that you should check out over the course of 2013, and this time I’ll be covering 14 films instead of the 12. Now as I said before there may be some films that won’t be on the list either because I don’t know about them or I don’t care about them, simple as. Anyways let’s start this start:

Release Date: April 12 (US), May 2 (AU)

I saw the first trailer for this film a few months ago and was immediately interested in watching it when it comes out in the cinema. Most films based on true events have a good story to tell and this film about Jackie Robinson, a black baseball player showing off his skills while dealing with the racism that was the norm at the time looks like some very intriguing and dramatic stuff. I guess the main reason I’m interested in this trailer is because as black person myself, seeing films about famous black figures in history rising up and making something of themselves just makes me smile. So anyways 42 looks hot and I can’t wait to see it in April.

Evil Dead

Release Date: April 12 (US), April 19 (UK)

All I can say is after watching the Red Band trailer for Evil Dead I am feeling so creeped out right now. I thought the first trailer was filthy and freaky, but this latest trailer just takes the cake! What the hell is all this filth! Man I swear when I see this in the cinema all be freaking out like a little girl haha. Now I’m not really into horror films purely because I hate being scared out of my wits, that being said I am VERY interested in watching this remake of Evil Dead. I still haven’t watched the original films in their entirety but I know that they have a huge following. I mean this remake has to be worth a watch; both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have been heavily involved in the production of this film so that must have helped to modernize the classic film too. Anyway 2013 sees its fair share of remakes so I hope this one stands out.

Release Date: April 12 (US & UK)

Firstly I love how Tom Cruise is again playing a character called Jack, I hope this continues into his later films so that he can sent a trend or something haha. Anyway, Oblivion to me looks pretty awesome. The trailer seems to show us this post-apocalyptic look at Earth with Tom Cruise and some other lady sorting out the mess that was left being after some massive attack took place. But then enter MORGAN FREEMAN! This guy is one of the most legendary people ever and in this film he is totally looking badass like Morpheus from The Matrix. It’s not until halfway through the trailer when things start to get interesting and we see that not everything is as it seems. There seems to be a lot mystery, conspiracy and deceit going down for Cruise’s character and I’m interested to see where that goes.

Pain and Gain

Release Date: April 26 (US), May 3 (UK)

Oh what’s this? A Michael Bay film that doesn’t involve robots? And it has just humans as the main focus of the film? Okay you have my attention. No offence to people who like the Transformers films but they have numbed my brain to the point of no return so whenever I hear anything to do with Michael Bay on the internet I switch immediately, but this film looks like it could be fun. Pain and Gain honestly comes across as a bit ridiculous, but at the same time it looks like fun and I did smile a few times. Plus I like Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson so there may be hope for this film yet.

Iron Man 3

Release Date: April 26 (UK), May 3 (US)

I think I have made my thoughts on Iron Man 3 pretty clear already but for those not in the know let me just say this… I WANT IRON MAN 3 RIGHT NOW! The word ‘excited’ doesn’t even begin to comprehend how hyped I am for this film. Besides Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3 has been on my radar ever since I finished watching The avengers in cinemas last year, and when the trailer dropped in October I blew up! It looks so frigging badass, the drama, the scope, the action; I like what I am seeing. I’m just hoping that that this film is better than the last Iron Man film and is more in line with the first one. This could be the best Iron Man film or it could very well be the worst, let’s just hope that Sir Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin can be the kick ass villain from the comics that we know he can be yo. Bring on May 2013!

The Great Gatsby

Release Date: May 10 (US), May 17 (UK)

I don’t really know much about this film besides the fact that it was meant to come out last year but got pushed back to this year and that the film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan as lead roles. There has been a lot of talk and hyped surrounding this film and there have been good few film adaptations of the novel before this film so I’m wondering how it’ll fair. I finally seen the most recent trailer and I can see why this film is causing a lot of commotion, it looks very interesting, dramatic and potentially Oscar-worthy too.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Release Date: May 17 (US & UK)

Like Iron Man 3, my hype for Star Trek Into Darkness is beyond words. I WANT THIS FILM IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW! I loved the 2009 film; it rebooted the franchise in a wonderful way and put Star Trek back into mainstream media. Sure one could argue that the last film pushed the Star Trek series into a more action-oriented direction, but I think it benefitted from this and picked up the pace from slower episodes in the series. But let’s move onto this new film, it looks epic! The first teaser trailer had me totally hyped out of my mind. Seeing all of the chaos, amazing visuals and awesome shots of the cast just makes me so happy. I’ve also got mad hype for Benedict Cumberbatch and I can’t wait to see what kind of issues he presents for Starfleet and the crew of the Enterprise.

Fast & Furious 6

Release Date: May 24 (US & UK)

Fast and Furious 5

Yay! Another Fast and Furious film! Fast Five was awesome and arguably the best film in the series so to see the films continue is not a problem for me as long as its good. The cast of series including veterans Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster, along with Dwayne Johnson and new faces Gina Carano and Luke Evans who plays the villain. Justin Lin returns to direct and apparently this film reunites the gang for their most dangerous adventure yet. Now obviously by the time Fast Five had come out this film series had become less about car driving and had become a whole new type of elaborate action film. But that wasn’t an issue for me, as long as Fast and Furious 6 gets the car scenes down, has a decent story and has a rematch for Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson then I’ll be happy.

After Earth

Release Date: June 7 (US & UK)

I want this film to be good. I want so badly for this film not to suck. It features not only my favourite actor ever, Will Smith but also his son Jaden (who is starting to become a really good rapper), and the trailer for this film actually looks pretty intriguing. What we see in trailer is a lot of interesting locations and landscapes and cool shot of Will Smith looking badass, and a lot of shots of Jaden in different locations and flying around in a squirrel suit haha. I like Will Smith’s voiceover in the trailer; it really sets the tone for the film and explains a lot about what the planet was like prior to its current state and leaves room for mystery. The only looming shadow over this film is M. Night Shyamalan, he hasn’t done a good film in years and I fear the Smiths will suffer because of his curse on films. But again I PRAY that this film doesn’t suck!

Man of Steel

Release Date: June 14 (US & UK)

Ah a new Superman film that’s directed by Zack Snyder of 300, Watchmen and Sucker Punch. It’s being produced by Christopher Nolan of The Dark Knight Trilogy and being written by David S. Goyer. This all sounds both intriguing and questionable. Why? Well firstly there hasn’t been a good Superman film since the first two films decades ago. Plus Zack Snyder as good as he is at creating great visual spectacles in his films, he has a bad habit of using slow motion too much and Sucker Punch left a bad taste in my mouth yo. But I assume that Chris Nolan will keep this project afloat and stop it from sucking, plus I think Snyder’s eye for good action sequences will benefit Man of Steel. The first full trailer seems like a very different and colder interpretation of the Superman source material, and while it doesn’t make me overly excited, it does make me curious.

This is The End

Release Date: June 14 (US), June 28 (UK)

This is another film that I didn’t know existed until very recently and I watched the Red Band trailer and have to say it looks pretty jokes. While the thing with Seth Rogen and James Franco gotten a little to drawn out in the beginning, the rest of the trailer looked crazy with all this chaos, death and funny exchanges between some of the characters involved. Plus Craig Robinson was just funny as hell in this trailer. It looks like it’ll be a good time; I just hope it’ll be worth my time because I am very picky when it comes to comedy films.

Monsters University

Release Date: June 21 (US), July 12 (UK)

The teaser trailer above was the first look I got of Monster University and it does seem like it could be fun, I’m not overly keen on the whole “Monsters Inc.: The College Years” idea, but maybe Pixar had a good idea for this tale. Now even though I have this film in my list I can’t say I’m that hyped about it. I though Monsters Inc. was a good film, not a great one but a good watch. But man it didn’t need a prequel. I say it all the time, certain films don’t need continuations or backstories because they work fine on their own and most of them are only created to make more money for the studios involved. But heck I could be wrong. Monsters University could be awesome and could put Pixar back on the map as the animation studio that can’t do any wrong (they need it after the disappointment that was Brave).

Kick-Ass 2

Release Date: June 28 (US), July 19 (UK)

Newscom TagID: infphotos624754/Photo via Newscom

I thought Kick-Ass in 2010 was pretty awesome and gave us a realistic take on what superheroes would look like in real life. It was funny, action-packed and way better than I expected. And so now we have Kick-Ass 2 in which Aaron Taylor-Johnson, ChloĂ« Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse return as Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist where new adventures and adversaries. I am curious to see how new director Jeff Wadlow takes over from Matthew Vaughan, and I’m also interested to see how this film adaptation varies from the comics and how much it’ll be toned down by too. All I need a bloody trailer and I’ll be happy.

White House Down

Release Date: June 28 (US), September 6 (UK)

Now I didn’t know about this film’s existence until I saw it in IGN’s 2013 film guide and the following premise alone got me interested:

Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx).  Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group.  Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

Most films with Jamie Foxx are worth watching and this is main I’m keeping my eye on White House Down, well that and the plot sounds cool too.

Alrighty then well that is part 2 of my film list over, hopefully you enjoyed my picks and look forward to the next part when it comes around (part 3 may take a little longer than the last 2). Peace out! 😀
