Howdy ladies and gents and welcome to Day #6 of my Month of Nostalgic Game Reviews where I’ll be giving you reviews of some of my most nostalgic video games from my childhood. And today we have another game which I keep forgetting that I used to own, but it was super awesome. Today I’m talking about Lemmings!
This puzzle game was originally released 1991 and it was ported to several consoles thereafter. The main objective of the game was to lead the creatures known as lemmings through the level to a specific exit point. In order to do win you had to get a certain number of lemmings to the exit and the way you did that was by utilizing each of their specific abilities to change the environment, destroy obstacles and make safe passages. While earlier levels started out simple enough, later levels had much more intricate pitfalls and hazards to work your way through which would test your reflexes and your patience. There were eight different types of lemmings from ones that could block other lemmings from moving in that specific direction to others who miners who dig downwards to the awesome bombers who blow up after five seconds (such legends)! There was also a two-player mode with 20 levels to play through which did get a bit chaotic from what I can remember.
Now this is a special little game for me, it was one of the most addictive games I ever played (I know I have said that for a lot of the previous games but it is so true in this case!). I had the Sega Mega Drive version of this game and I remember this game very clearly. Whenever I think about Lemmings it makes me smile and cringe. I smile because I spent a lot of my time as a kid playing this game, trying to advance and think of strategies of how to keep my lemmings alive. The reason I cringe is because this game frustrated the hell out of me when I got so far only for my strategies to fail as my lemmings fell to their death or got trapped somewhere resulting in me having to blow them all up. I faced so much pain with this game it was unreal. But I do have good memories with this game, the graphics were nice and the music was so jokes, it was just a load of well-known traditional and classic tunes reworked into the game, so you’d hear anything from “Dance of the Little Swans” to “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain“, it was mental! I find it funny how these days I really hate puzzle and RTS games and yet I used to play a lot of them when I was younger. What happened to me? Haha!
In conclusion Lemmings is the kind of game that is fun, unique and really addictive, but it really does require a lot of strategy and your full attention or it will destroy you. I really do miss games like this, ones that were so simple, so different and yet complex. The 90s really was good time for gaming; I miss it ever so much. But anyways if can find a way to play this game, go out and do it!
Okay people check back here tomorrow where I’ll have another nostalgic game review waiting for ya! 🙂
