My Mate Mel

Now this was a blog post I was meant to have written and finished back in November 2012 but unfortunately time literally got away from me and I had to push it back to 2013. But now that I have an open window of opportunity I feel that is time for me to tell you about my lovely friend Melissa, who is honestly one of the best friends I’ve ever had!

Now in order to tell you about my mate Mel I have to tell the story of how we met because it wasn’t by conventional means. Now back in 2006 when MySpace was still around and the big social networking website, I was hanging around there when I was contacted by girl called Mel and we connected mainly based on our love for Jamiroquai. Yes, the power of the acid jazz band Jamiroquai brought us together! Talk about the power of music yo! After that we got conversing for a while and then started talking on MSN, and even exchanged phone numbers and had long ass texting and phone call conversations. And naturally we eventually moved onto Facebook and kept in contact. She was technically my first online friend I’d ever made such a solid connection with.

So after a good few years of messaging online, texting and calling each other, in 2011 when I applied for university and one of my picks was Sheffield Hallam University imagine my surprise when I found out that Mel went to the same uni. I knew at that time that I had to get in and when I was finally accepted there both of our excitement levels went over 9000! And then after missing each other in Fresherโ€™s Week we finally met up face to face in October 2011. It was frigging surreal experience which I couldn’t get over at. But we had a cool time conversing and drinking coffee, it was a beautiful occasion. And from there we ran into each just a little bit in my first year, but in my second year I’ve been seeing her all over the place and we’ve had way more face-to-face interactions. Since she’s in her third year we don’t get to hang too much so I do cherish the times I do get to see her because she’s the best.

So what makes my mate Mel so great? Well firstly look at our friendship, we met online and were from different ends of UK, yet we remained friends for several years before eventually meeting each other in the fresh and we’ve been mates for 7 years. That’s some hardcore stuff. She is one of the loveliest people I’ve ever known; she’s kind, friendly, funny, strange and amazing. Her personality and interests are great and similar to my own, plus she loves Jamiroquai and anyone that respects their music has my respect. Every time I see her it’s like there’s a glow about her and she just seems jolly and that’s the kind of attitude I like. Plus she is a pretty lass too. ๐Ÿ˜€

It is hard to describe what makes Mel so special to me, all I can say is she is one of the best friends I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and hope that our friendship lasts forever! There are many people in the world and there are very few you can say that you are privileged to know, but my mate Mel is one of them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Birthdays Are Awesome!

You know birthdays are interesting little things aren’t they? It is the one day in the year that symbolizes your age and it is that one special day to celebrate your existence in the world. The anticipation towards this one day can be pretty immense depending on the specific age or occasion and besides Christmas, it is the most important time of the year for most people. But when that day normally comes it can be an incredible experience. Being around your family and friends on that day is a great feeling because you are around people who love and care about you, also depending on how old you are you can get presents too which can be an exciting experience in itself.

Birthdays, they are just an excuse to have fun ๐Ÿ˜€

Either way your birthday is the one day for you to be you, to enjoy life and celebrate the fact that you’ve made it one more day into a new age with new and exciting opportunities ahead of you. Well that’s what birthdays mean to me.

Just recently (yesterday in fact) I turned 22 and it was a pretty crazy lead-up to the day. I had been waiting for this day in particular since January when me and my faltmates had a flat party and went out for one of their birthdays and that was an incredible, unforgettable night and I wanted the same for myself when my night came around. Not only that but last year I never went out or did anything big for my 21st birthday so the event for my 22nd was gonna have to be big to make up for not doing anything last year. this year I decided to have a flat party with all of the people I have met since coming to Sheffield. So then Friday came along and I woke up to lovely birthday messages on my phone and Facebook. Then headed off to class in uni only to find out there was no class, so that annoyed me a little bit, but at the same time I was like “Yay no class!” So then when my second class came around I went into that and got a birthday wish off a friend and an even bigger and louder happy birthday off of my other classmate which resulted in several other people who I didn’t know giving me happy birthday wishes too, so that was unexpectedly nice ๐Ÿ˜€

So in class outside of doing work I had some interesting and funny conversations with my mates before heading back to my flat. Then I went out to the pub with my flat mate and some other friends and while playing pool one of my other classmates who had promised me cake finally sorted me some cake, it was incredible. I swear it was like one of the best moments of my life. I don’t get given many things from my friends, so the fact I got a whole cake from a classmate from university who I haven’t known for very long was very touching. She is definitely gonna be one of my best friends for life! So we continued to chill at the pub and had some food before rushing back to the flat to make a playlist and fix it up before the party people started showing up. Then people started coming, the music started playing (even if it wasn’t always from my playlist) and the drinking began. It was just a great feeling to be around all of these people who said that they were gonna come, I felt so loved. We all danced, drank, hugged and I took so many pictures it was insane. It was a beautiful atmosphere of smiles and chaos. So much stuff got messed up. Stools moved up and down the hallway, me and my flatmates’s rooms keep being invaded, two of my mates were dressed in wonzies at one point and the drinking game known as “Battleshots” was mad. Though the night didn’t end there, we eventually went out on the town and danced and raved it up in the clubs of Sheffield it was great. There was a lot of last night I don’t remember, but luckily from what I do recall I did have fun, probably the most amount of fun I’ve had in a long time.

So yeah I just wanted to share with you people of the internet my delightful birthday experience. This birthday more than made up for my 21st and even though it was my first birthday away from home and my family, my parents did call me and I got a funny text off my sister too so it was all good ๐Ÿ™‚ I just wanted to say that birthdays are awesome and they can be fun for anyone if you let them be ๐Ÿ˜€

Kony 2012

Hello ladies and gentlemen, tonight’s blog is going to be on a bit more a serious matter that I believe the world should be aware of and that is Kony 2012.

At first I saw the video posted up by a few friends on Facebook yesterday morning around 3am, but I thought nothing of it because most people who share videos on my news feed are just posting rubbish. But then during the late point of the afternoon loads of people on Facebook started talking about Kony 2012 and it really blew up on Facebook so recently I decided to sit down and see what the feel was with this video… And my god it really hit me. Just watch it below:

In this documentary Jason Russell, the crafter of this documentary talks about his filmmaking experiences inย Uganda and how all of things that he learn about lead him to Uganda he started the campaign group Invisible Children Inc. The main aim of this film is to highlight the evil actions of one man, the war criminal known as Joseph Kony. This film want’s to make him famous so that the government will pay attention to him enough to take action and get him captured and bring justice to the world. But why all of the fuss about one man? Well Joseph Kony is the leader of a group called the Lord’s Resistance Army also known as the LRA and they have down horrible things to the children of Uganda, abducting them, turning the boys into small soldiers and turning the girls into sex slaves and horribly scaring the faces of children too. The guy has been evading capture for years, but now with this new campaign and thanks to the power of social networking the people of the world have the power to change something important. The video has gotten a lot of support from celebrities too and is gaining widespread popularity and according to Wikipedia, “As of 7 March 2012, the film currently has over 8.2 million views on Vimeo, and over 12.8 million views on video-sharing website YouTube, with other viewing emanating from a central “Kony2012” website operated by Invisible Children.

There’s even an event going down all overt he world on April 20th called ‘Cover The Night’ where people will go around all major cities and make the world aware of Joseph Kony by putting up posters all over the place, consider it like graffiti tagging, except for all the right reasons. There’s even one going down in my local city of Sheffield and there seems to be around over 4,000 people attending which sounds completely insane but very exciting at the same time. I think you can tell that I am totally up for this, it seems like a genuine campaign for a good cause and to be honest if that Kony guy is brought to justice then it would be great to know that you were part of something so important and also be part of history too. I would encourage anyone to join this cause, obviously you don’t have to, but I believe that this is something that will be something to be remembered so I’m gonna rock it.
