Chronicle Sequel Gets New Screenwriting Blood

Good day to you ladies and gentlemen, time for a little film news and while today’s story isn’t exactly ground-breaking I still feel the need to talk about it because we haven’t heard anything about Chronicle 2 in a while. The following information comes from superherohype:

“It was reported last summer that Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis had departed the 20th Century Fox sequel. Today Deadline reports that the studio has brought in screenwriting newcomer Jack Stanley to tackle the follow-up to the 2012 hit.

The original film, which starred Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell and Michael Kelly, told the story of three high school students who make an incredible discovery, leading to them developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities, and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.

Landis had previously mentioned that director Josh Trank was never attached to the Chronicle sequel and likely won’t return, due to his commitment to the upcoming The Fantastic Four.”

Alright, well even though there hasn’t been any additional movement on this film since Max Landis dropped out as the writer, I can only assume that bringing this writer in means that the film is still gonna go ahead right? Now I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Chronicle does not need a sequel. The film is fine on its own. I loved the film, it was an unexpected bit of fun for me and was one of my favourite films of 2012 and while there were a few unanswered questions relating to how the boys got their powers and all that stuff, the film pretty much wrapped up nicely with no reason to return. I mean what’s gonna follow next in the sequel, some more boys or girls or people of both genders find something glowing crystal in the ground and get superpowers? Boring. It’s been done. The point I’m getting at is that Chronicle was unique, dark and funny, it wasn’t like other films, if you make a franchise out it without taking the proper steps then you’ll dilute the formula and ruin what made the original so fun, 20th Century Fox could turn this into the Shrek, Paranormal Activity or Saw series if they’re not careful. With Josh Trank unlikely to direct and Max Landis leaving the project I had no interest in this sequel and it doesn’t help that Jack Stanley is a fairly unknown writer and while I know of the films he’s worked on, I haven’t seen any of them. Fox better be careful with this one.

Max Landis No Longer Writing Chronicle 2

Alrighty then, time to talk about some film news! Yay! Today however the news isn’t exactly that of a good nature as it concerns the sequel to last year’s Chronicle film directed by Josh Trank and written by Max Landis. Anyways the following info comes from superherohype:

A few months ago we had an update from Chronicle writer Max Landis that things were still moving along for the super-powered sequel, but now it seems things aren’t were he would like them to be. Landis wrote on Twitter that he has been off the project for months and that Fox has brought new writers to work on the sequel.

“Ultimately, I’m just very grateful to Fox for making a film as close to my original script as Chronicle was.  For making the film at all. So yeah it’s sad that as of right now I’m not involved in the sequel, and don’t know what it’s about even, but ultimately I can’t complain…Chronicle 2 is still probably happening, just not with my involvement as of now.  It’s a bummer, but there are no real hard feelings.”

Landis also mentioned that director Josh Trank was never attached to the sequel and likely won’t return, given he is in pre-production on the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot.

There were previous reports that Fox wanted to move in a different direction from Landis’ initial script. Those were at first said to be untrue but now appear to be accurate.”

Well this is certainly a darn shame. Man Landis did a right good job with Chronicle and know that he’s not on the project because of creative differences between him and 20th Century Fox sucks. I never wanted this film to have a sequel in the first place, but since Fox love their money I’m not surprised they want to get a sequel out of Chronicle. However when you get rid of the writer behind the success of the previous film and don’t have the director from the previous film either you’re gonna look a little silly. My thoughts right now is that I want this project to be immediately, but we all know that won’t happen. Let’s just wait and see who Fox gets to replace Landis and possibly Trank too.
