Films To Look Out For In 2019 Part 1

Good day to you ladies and gentlemen, it’s a new year so you know what time it is, once again it is time for my preview of upcoming films that I believe are worth a look entitled: Films to look out for in 2019! In PART 1 I’ll be covering films released from now until March, and while these aren’t necessarily the best films that’ll be coming out between now and the end of March, I do believe there’s merit to all of the films on this list.

Now before we begin I have two main things I need to point out:

  1. Obviously, a lot of films come out, so if they’re not on my list it’s either because I don’t know about them or I don’t care…
  2. 2018 films getting their UK releases this year don’t count! So there. 😛

Okay then, let’s start 😀

Replicas

Release Date: January 11th (USA)

Trailer:

The plot can be described as the following: “A daring synthetic biologist, after a car accident kills his family, will stop at nothing to bring them back, even if it means pitting himself against a government-controlled laboratory, a police task force and the physical laws of science.” So this film caught my eye because of Keanu Reeves and Alice Eve’s involvement and the sci-fi thriller angle, and sure after seeing the trailer  it does look very familiar to films we’ve seen before and it could be pretty bad, however, I’m a little curious to see Reeves in this kind of role and how the story unfolds..

The Upside

Release Date: January 11th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

Now, this is a film I actually had on this same type of list last year, so its weird to be writing about it again. But I am still very much interested in this especially after seeing the trailer. The premise still sounds interesting: “A comedic look at the relationship between a wealthy paraplegic and an unemployed man with a criminal record who’s hired to help him.” And while the trailer has a familiar feel and story of two unlikely people forming a bond, but it does look like fun and Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston seem to be having fun.

Glass

Release Date: January 18th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

Mate, this is the first major film of the year that I’m really looking forward to. Split really surprised me back in January 2017 with its interesting story, incredible central performance from James McAvoy and of course its later reveal that it was connected to the brilliant Unbreakable. And with the release of each trailer I’ve gotten more and more excited, the concept of seeing Mr. Glass, The Beast and David Dunn in the same space and seeing this strange, dark and intriguing superhero world that Shyamalan created come together fills me with excitement and curiosity.

Serenity

Release Date: January 25th (US), March 1st (UK)

Trailer:

This film caught my interest for a few reasons: 1) I saw Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway are involved. I’m in. 2) It’s directed by Steven Knight who directed Eastern Promises and wrote Hummingbird. And 3) The brief story summary caught my attention with it following a fishing boat captain who is approached by his ex-wife to murder her new husband, very interesting.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Release Date: February 8th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

Now the first Lego Movie I loved back in 2014, I thought it was one of the most incredible things ever for its super fun, hilarious and crazy nature, the cast was great and amazing stuff that was done with the stop-motion/CGI visuals was top notch. However, over the years my fondness for the film diminished, so when the trailers for the sequel came out I wasn’t as into it as a lot of people. That being said I’m still curious and hope that this film can capture the magic of the first while delivering a solid follow-up to the last film.

Cold Pursuit

Release Date: February 8th (USA), February 22nd (UK)

Trailer:

Like last year I find myself looking at another new Liam Neeson thriller where is off going to kill some people, and while the trailer and premise is very familiar territory especially for Neeson, this one has just enough differences from what I’ve seen before that I want to watch it. This story looks a little more complicated than a simple revenge tale, pitting to crime groups against each other, having a man who kills based on a book that he read and with a little comedy mixed in? Okay, I’m curious.

Alita: Battle Angel

Release Date:  February 14th (USA), February 6th (UK)

Trailer:

So this was one of my most anticipated films of summer 2018, but then it was delayed, and then delayed again to where we are now. I feel like I have been waiting for AGES for this film to come out, I was on board from the first trailer because of the casting, the post-apocalyptic setting and the origins/journey of Alita.  I just hope that after all the development and work that went into this that the film’s good.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

Release Date: February 22nd (USA), February 1st (UK)

Trailer:

Now the first HTTYD I thought was good, but the sequel was one of my favourite films of 2014 for its visuals and emotional story. I’m not stupidly hyped for this new film, but I will say that the trailers did get me hyped with the visuals, colour scheme and new scenarios relating to the villain and new white dragon that looks like Toothless.

The Rhythm Section

Release Date: February 22nd (USA & UK)

The premise for this film caught my attention: “A woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family.” I do love a good mystery thriller with a hint of revenge and this seems like it could be interesting.

Chaos Walking

Release Date: March 1st (USA & UK)

I remember hearing about this film a while ago and though I knew nothing about its story, I was on board because Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley were starring in it and the film was being directed by Doug Liman, the man who gave me two of my favourite films The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow. The premise sounds pretty interesting: “A dystopian world where there are no women and all living creatures can hear each others’ thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise.” And I like a bit of sci-fi so hopefully, this should be good.

Captain Marvel

Release Date: March 8th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

Now I have been following Captain Marvel for a while now and until the trailers, I was stupidly hyped for this as the first female-lead superhero film for the MCU and knowing of her power from the cartoons I’ve seen and games that I’ve played, I know she’s awesome. However, the trailers haven’t gotten me that me that hyped. The first trailer had a nice tone, atmosphere and mystery to it, and the second trailer had some cool shots of Carol Danvers in full uniform flying around looking cool and stuff. But those trailers haven’t been nearly as exciting or badass as some of Marvel’s previous material. I really hope this film is good because if it works it’ll open so many opportunities for the MCU.

Us

Release Date: March 15th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

I haven’t even watched this trailer yet, even after all the hype that spread online about it, I’m just lazy haha. However, I will be watching this film just because of Jordan Peele’s involvement. That guy surprised me so much with Get Out from last year, so I can’t wait to see what his follow-up film will be like, it also helps that two of the main stars are Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke. I can’t wait.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Release Date: March 9th (USA), March 23rd (UK)

Trailer:

I only found out about this film while looking through films that’ll be coming out over the next two months and what grabbed me was the premise and the fact that Cate Blanchett was involved. And then I saw that Richard Linklater was directing this, now I’m very excited to see how this pans out.

Captive State

Release Date: March 29th (USA) April 12th (UK)

Trailer:

And this film comes out the day before my birthday so hopefully, it makes for a good watch but from what I’ve read so far it is totally up my alley. It is a sci-fi film, its directed by Rupert Wyatt who did Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it has John Goodman and Vera Farmiga starring in it and the film and the plot seems pretty intriguing. I really hope that it’s good.

Alrighty then, that’s PART 1 done. Thanks a lot for reading. Are any of the films listed on your personal list of films to watch? Whatever your thoughts are, drop them in the comments section below and I’ll see you soon for PART 2! Laters 😀

Films To Look Out For In 2018 Part 3

Howdy people of the interweb and welcome to Films to look out for in 2018! This is my preview of upcoming films that I believe you should check out this year. In PART 1 I covered films from January to March, in PART 2 I covered April to July and in this post, I’ll be covering August to December.

Now before we begin I have two main things I need to point out:

  1. Obviously, a lot of films come out, so if they’re not on my list it’s either because I don’t know about them or I don’t care…
  2. 2017 films getting their UK releases this year don’t count! So there. 😛

Okay then, let’s start 😀

The Predator

Release Date: August 3rd (USA & UK)

I am a massive fan of the first Predator film, it brings me so much joy and nostalgia every time I watch it. Unfortunately, none of the sequels was able to capture the magic of the first film, Predator 2 was interesting but not as good and Predators had some great ideas but with questionable execution. So when I heard Shane Black was going to direct I got so excited, I also like several members of the cast and the new story and setting sounds interesting. I really hope the film’s good, these series needs a win.

Captive State

Release Date: August 17th (USA & UK)

Here’s the premise: “Set in a Chicago neighbourhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, Captive State explores the lives on both sides of the conflict – the collaborators and dissidents.” That plot summary sounds very interesting and unique, plus I like Rupert Wyatt for what he did with Rise of the Planet of the Apes so I’ll be curious to see what he brings to this film.

The Darkest Minds

Release Date: September 14th (USA & UK)

I just looked this film up and the premise caught my interest; “After a disease kills 98% of America’s children, the surviving 2% develop superpowers and are placed in internment camps. A 16-year-old girl escapes her camp and joins a group of other teens on the run from the government.” Sounds familiar yet compelling, plus it has Amandla Stenberg from The Hunger Games and Gwendoline Christie from Game of Thrones, so I’m definitely intrigued.

Boy Erased

Release Date: September 28th (USA)

Here’s the premise: “The son of a baptist preacher is forced to participate in a church-supported gay conversion program.” Sounds like a story full of hardship, drama and uncomfortable situations, and I’m curious to see how Joel Edgerton directs the film.

A Star Is Born

Release Date: October 5th (USA)

Normally I’m not interested in musicals, but in recent years I’ve made a habit of checking them out in the cinema if the right people are attached, and this film falls into that category. I’ve not seen any of the previous versions, but I’m curious to see this because A) It is being directed by Bradley Cooper which is intriguing and B) Cooper is the main star alongside Lady Gaga and I really want to know how they interact, plus Gaga can sing, I know that, but what about Cooper? I’m hella curious.

First Man

Release Date: October 12th (USA), November 2nd (UK)

I am curious about this film for a few reasons: 1) The subject matter is based on a true story about Neil Armstrong and the NASA mission to get to the moon. 2) The fact that this is Damien Chazelle’s first not related to music. 3) The cast including Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Corey Stoll and Kyle Chandler among others.

Mowgli

Release Date: October 19th (USA & UK)

A few years ago we found out that there would be two Jungle Book films, one that was a remake of the Disney animated classic from Jon Favreau and another version based on the source material made by Andy Serkis. Favreau’s version came out in 2016 and was really good so that definitely put pressure on Serkis’ version. And so after a few pushbacks, the film’s set to come out towards the latter half of the year and I’m curious to see how this film differs from the 2016 film with the visual effects, motion capture and story elements.

Widows

Release Date:  November 9th (UK), November 16th (USA)

Here’s the premise that grabbed my interest: “Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.” I love a good crime thriller, this film sounds like fun and I like cast including Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Farrell, Jon Bernthal, André Holland, Daniel Kaluuya and Liam Neeson.

Creed 2

Release Date: October 13th (USA), October 20th (UK)

I really liked Creed back in 2015, was such a nice surprise and great continuation of the Rocky franchise with Adonis as the star and Rocky in the mentor role. While I really hoped that Ryan Coogler would come back, I knew it’d be next to impossible because of his work on Black Panther, so when I Sly Stallone said he’d direct I thought it’d be a decent choice considering his work on Rocky Balboa, but then he was changed for newcomer Steven Caple Jr. I’m concerned yet excited for the sequel.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

Release Date: November 21st (USA), November 30th (UK)

Now here’s the thing, when I first saw Wreck-It Ralph in the cinema, I was in love. It was the best animated film I’d seen since Toy Story 3, was very fun and original, and the video game references meant the world to me as they were overt and subtle at the same time. However, after a while, my love for this film really dwindled for some reason, but I’m still hyped to see what the sequel does with the internet as Ralph’s playground.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Release Date: December 14th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

I’m so hyped for this film and it is all thanks to that teaser trailer. I had little interest in this film until I saw that trailer, and then everything changed. Now obviously this is just teaser trailer, but I really enjoy the look of this film with the art, lighting, animation and camera angles. Plus I’m excited to see what this film does with Miles Morales and the potential other Spider-related characters.

Mortal Engines

Release Date: December 14th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

Well here we have the first major film from Peter Jackson since he finished the last film in the Hobbit trilogy and I’ve heard a lot of talk about it. I only recently read what it was about and seen the trailer, and I’m certainly intrigued. On paper, the premise sounds interesting, but that teaser really helps sell the gravity of the situation and it looks insane. I’m in.

Aquaman

Release Date: December 21st (USA & UK)

Oh Aquaman, I’m so very, very curious about you. The DC film universe is a bit of a mess at the moment, besides last year’s Wonder Woman, every film in this series has been mixed to negative in reception and Justice League didn’t leave everyone in a happy place after it ended. I think this film has the potential to be great mainly due to James Wan in the director’s seat, he’s very well established in the horror genre and I’m curious if he’ll bring any of that style into this new film.

Mary Poppins Returns

Release Date: December 21st (UK) December 25th (USA)

Okay so here’s the thing, I’ve never watched Mary Poppins the whole way through. I never saw it as a kid and I tried watching it during Boxing Day last year and I just couldn’t do it. The film felt so cheesy and insufferable, I could see elements of an enjoyable film, but it just wasn’t for me. That being said, I know the general gist of the first film and I’ll be curious to see where the sequel takes the story and if it’ll do the original justice or if fans will revolt. 😛

So finally that’s PART 3 done. Thanks a lot for reading. Are any of the films listed on your personal list of films to watch? Whatever your thoughts are, be sure to drop them in the comment section below and come back soon to see my Most Anticipated Films of 2018! Peace out. 😀
