Films To Look Out For In 2020 Part 2

Howdy people of the interweb and welcome to Films to look out for in 2020! This is my preview of upcoming films that I believe you should check out. In PART 1 I covered films from January to April, and in this post, I’ll be covering May to August.

Now before we begin I have two main things I need to point out:

1. Obviously, a lot of films come out, so if they’re not on my list it’s either because I don’t know about them or I don’t care…

Okay then, let’s start 😀

Black Widow

Release Date: May 1st (USA & UK)

This is a film I’ve been waiting for since 2014 after Winter Soldier came out and I had hoped at the latest it would have come out by 2016, but alas we had to wait just a little while longer to get a solo film for one of the most notable and well-received Avengers; Black Widow. Now I know there have been detractors for years claiming that we didn’t need a Black Widow solo film because it would be boring or there wouldn’t be much story to tell and so on. But considering how diverse the world of comics is, how much of her past remains a mystery and we also don’t know what she does when she’s not hanging out with her other superhero friends, there’s been plenty of opportunities to tell a kick-ass action spy thriller story surrounding Natasha and tense and dangerous situations she gets up to. I love the cast especially with Rachel Weisz and David Harbour being included, some of the action looks like it comes from the Bourne films which I love, and while the latest trailer didn’t wow me, I’m very much all for this film and pray that it is the spy adventure I’ve always wanted.

The Woman in the Window

Release Date: May 15th (USA & UK)

This film looks crazy and I wat it now. While I’ve seen elements of this kind of story in other films, I think the premise alone has me very much intrigued. The concept of a woman who can’t go outside who seemingly witnesses a murder of a friend and then is investigated by the police only to find the woman is actually a different person and there may be a conspiracy afoot? Cool. This kind of psychological madness is very enticing and since it’s coming from director Joe Wright and features an exceptional cast, this is high on my list for 2020.

Fast & Furious 9

Release Date: May 22nd (USA & UK)

Now at this point, you’re either on board with this franchise or you’re not, and while my interest in it has definitely waned in recent times, I’m still curious to see what they come up with. This franchise is just dumb and ridiculous and I want to know what kind of over-the-top material they’re going to do with the story and action, though I hope it is better than the 8th one.

Artemis Fowl

Release Date:  May 29th (USA & UK)

I totally wrote about this film last year and it was set to come out last summer but got delayed to this year. I only just watched the trailer today and it looks pretty cool. Now Disney adaptations in recent times have been a little questionable in recent times and there’s a lot of people who read the source material complaining that the film already deviates from the book (not that they don’t have a right to voice their concerns). But for me as a casual viewer, it looks interesting, not sure what to make of it, but it looks intriguing enough and I want to see what Kenneth Branagh does with this.

Wonder Woman 1984

Release Date: June 5th (USA & UK)

I know a lot of people have gone gaga over this trailer, and while I will admit there were some hype moments in the trailer when it comes to some action and the choice of music is quite effective, I’m not losing my mind over it. I was already down for a sequel after the first film really won me over in 2017, now I’m just curious to see how Steve comes back and whether Pedro Pascal will make for a better villain than the first film. Plus I hope the action is more intricate and less slow-mo focused.

Soul

Release Date: June 19th (USA & UK)

Now, this is the kind of Pixar film I want. No offence to any of their recent efforts (except for Coco, that film was great), but this teaser trailer already gives me good vibes and tells me I’m in for something special. I love the visuals, how the art is a mixture of realism with such strong and distinctive character design and the story looks like it’ll be humorous and emotional and I can’t wait. Plus any film with a focus on jazz and following your passion automatically has my vote.

Top Gun: Maverick

Release Date: June 26th (USA) July 17th (UK)

So here’s the thing, I don’t even love Top Gun. I just think it’s a fun film from the ’80s with a few fun moments and one of my all-time favourite songs “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. And yet after seeing the trailer for this film last year, I was totally in. Maybe it is this current era we’re living in where Tom Cruise just does crazy action roles and has the charisma to carry them along and I’m just down for that. I’m also curious to see what’s happened to the character since the last film and what kind of tricky stuff he’ll do in this film now that they’ll be filming the flight scenes in more intricate ways than before.

In the Heights

Release Date: June 26th (USA) August 7th (UK)

I’m not big into musicals, but I have been swayed by a few in recent times including Sing Street and La La Land, and watching this trailer recently I can say that this may be a contender for one of my favourites of the year. There’s a lot of heart, soul and energy in this film and it looks like it could be fun, plus it got the interesting combination of directed by Jon M. Chu and Lin-Manuel Miranda, so this will hopefully be something special.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Release Date: July 10th (USA & UK)

I love the first Ghostbusters film, it is one of my all-time favourite films and while I’ve never needed another entry in the series, I’ve always been curious to see where the world go in the modern era of filmmaking. And while there was the 2016 version, that just wasn’t my jam as Paul Feig’s humour isn’t my jam at all. But this trailer looks pretty interesting with the more serious tone and having a direct link to the original films. I hope that it’ll be good.

Tenet

Release Date: July 17th (USA & UK)

Christopher Nolan is one of those directors who for the most part is liked by film fans and some adore everything that he makes. For me, I like most of his filmography but sometimes feels like he’s a little overhyped. But his films are always interesting and I will always give the next entry in his filmography a watch, and Tenet… Looks mad! I only watched the trailer today and my literal reaction was “What!?! What is that?” I am confused and I want to see this film so bad now. It seems mysterious, suspenseful and crafty with some possibly time manipulation/time travel involved? Whatever the case is, I’m in, looks like fun.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

Release Date: August 21st (USA & UK)

now I’m not gonna act like I’m the biggest fan of Bill and Ted, but in my childhood, I remember a time where they were my everything. I just loved how chilled out, cool and quirky they were and the crazy adventures they went on especially in the animated series. It’s just nice to see after all the years of ifs and maybes that this film will finally be coming out and I’m very curious to see if that magic can be replicated in the modern era.

Films To Look Out For In 2019 Part 3

Howdy people of the interweb and welcome to Films to look out for in 2019! This is my preview of upcoming films that I believe you should check out this year. In PART 1 I covered films from January to March, in PART 2 I covered April to June and unlike previous years in this post, I’ll be covering July to December.

Now before we begin I have two main things I need to point out:

1. Obviously, a lot of films come out, so if they’re not on my list it’s either because I don’t know about them or I don’t care…
2. 2018 films getting their UK releases this year don’t count! So there. 😛

Okay then, let’s start 😀

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Release Date: July 5th (USA & UK)

Now depending on who you talk to, Spider-Man: Homecoming is either a pretty good Spidey film or a rubbish one, I fall into the former category. While Homecoming didn’t rock my world, it was still a really fun film and a different take on Spidey than what’s coming before. I am very curious to see how this sequel continues young Peter’s school adventures after all the drama of Avengers 3 & 4. I’m hoping Spidey’s new adventure will be more unique, focused on him and have better action sequences and film score.

The Lion King

Release Date: July 19th (USA & UK)

I used to love The Lion King as a kid, I watched it SO much for years, however, after my VHS got stolen and I got a lot older I just wasn’t feeling it as much. And once the film somehow blew up in the late 2000s as like the best film ever, I just couldn’t watch it because of the hype surrounding it. Anyway I know everyone and their mother is excited to see this remake and I still haven’t seen the teaser trailer yet, but I’m curious to see it because of the cast, but more so for what Jon Favreau will bring to this film like he did for The Jungle Book.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Release Date: July 26th (USA & UK)

I have been looking forward to watching this for ages for two reasons: 1) It’s a new Tarantino film and I know some people are over his films but I still look forward to what he’ll release. And 2) The cast. Having Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie in the same film makes me giddy.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

Release Date: August 2nd (USA & UK)

Now I know a lot of people weren’t keen on The Fate of the Furious for the lack of Paul Walker, not as good story and the way they changed Shaw from a villain to semi-good guy. But I thought the film was fun and Johnson and Statham had the best parts in the whole film, so even though the idea of this film feels weird, I’m down for it just to see how these two will bounce off of each other.

Artemis Fowl

Release Date: August 17th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

I’m mainly interested in this film because it is from Kenneth Branagh and I like his work as a director and I hope that this film is good.

It: Chapter Two

Release Date: September 6th (USA & UK)

IT was such a wonderful surprise back in 2017 and while it wasn’t the scariest thing ever, it was very atmospheric, dark, creepy and had a brilliant young cast and Bill Skarsgård who did a great job in the titular role. So I’m very curious to see how this sequel works with the adult versions of these characters and whether the fear factor will be just as strong, if not more so.

Spies in Disguise

Release Date: September 13th (USA & UK)

Trailer:

I’ve only heard about this film around a month ago and heard that Will Smith and Tom Holland was starring in it and I was like “I’m in.” Now, this is a film from Blue Sky Studios who are a little hit and miss with their material, but I hope that this is good like The Peanuts Movie.

Gemini Man

Release Date: October 4th (USA)

Now I heard about this film last year and thought it was interesting just because of the combination of an Ang Lee-directed film with Wil Smith starring. But on top of that, you have a cast including Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Benedict Wong and an intriguing premise that reads as follows: “Henry Brogen, an aging assassin seeking to exit his career finds himself going against a younger clone of himself, who can predict his every move.” I really hope that this film is good.

Joker

Release Date: October 4th (USA & UK)

I have been pretty much on board with this film because of the setting, story, the initial involvement of Martin Scorsese and a cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. I am very curious to see how this turns out, there is a lot of potential for brilliance and for us fans to have a great version of the Joker and his story that hasn’t been portrayed onscreen before.

The Goldfinch

Release Date: October 11th (USA & UK)

I like the sound of the premise which reads as follows: “As a child, Theodore Decker survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum — an attack that kills his mother. From there, he tumbles through a series of adventures that finds him living in Las Vegas with his deadbeat father and, later, involved in art forgeries.” Plus I’m curious to see how Ansel Elgort fares in this after his great debut in Baby Driver.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Release Date:  October 11th (USA & UK)

Are You Afraid of the Dark? was one of my favourite TV shows as a kid even though it scared the crap out of me with some of those episodes, so it was a massive surprise to me to see it listed for a film adaptation in October of this year. There’s no casting as far as I’ve seen, but it’s being directed by  D.J. Caruso and his films haven’t had the best track record when it comes to their reception. But I want to see this just see how it turns out.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Release Date: October 18th (USA), November 1st (UK)

I heard about this film via The John Campea Show on YouTube and being from the UK I never knew of the significance of Mister Rogers until I heard Campea talking about Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and the next film featuring Tom Hanks portraying him. The premise sounds interesting: “An award-winning cynical journalist, Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write an Esquire profile piece on the beloved television icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and Vogel’s perspective on life transformed after his encounter with Rogers.” And I will watch Hanks in almost anything so I hope this film is good.

Terminator 6

Release Date: November 1st (USA & UK)

Now I feel like I’m an idiot for putting this on my list because I kept getting disappointed by each Terminator sequel that’s come out since Judgment Day, and since Genisys was one of the most forgettable films of that year I gave up on hoping this franchise would be good again… However, this film is being treated as a direct sequence to T2, Linda Hamilton is back which is good and there are two cool new additions in the form of Mackenzie Davis and Gabriel Luna. I have no clue what the story will be like but I hope that its better than the last film.

The Good Liar

Release Date: November 15th (USA)

“A seasoned conman finds himself growing to care for the woman he orchestrated his latest scheme against after meeting her online.” So here we have an interesting premise, a solid director in the form of Bill Condon and the two main stars being Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren? Sounds good.

Knives Out

Release Date: November 27th (USA), November 29th (UK)

So this is the newest film from Rian Johnson and I know a lot of people have dismissed him from existence because of The Last Jedi, people shouldn’t forget about the great stuff he’s done beforehand with Breaking Bad, Brick and Looper. I’m just hoping with an original project it will fare better than taking on a major franchise that loads of people are very attached to. Beyond that, I love that this film is a murder mystery and features an incredible cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Lakeith Stanfield, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, and Christopher Plummer.

Star Wars: Episode IX

Release Date: December 21st (UK) December 25th (USA)

So I’m pretty sure a good number of people are checked out of the Star franchise now due to the way in which The Last Jedi and Solo turned out, and while I hated neither film, both films could have been handled very differently and could have been a lot better. That being said I’m still curious/hopeful for Episode IX. I don’t think this new trilogy is unsalvageable and while J. J. Abrams will have to do a lot course correct some of the unliked story and character material from Episode XIII, I am hopeful that Abrams will bring things back around.
