LATE REVIEW: Central Intelligence

20 Jul

Howdy people of the internet, its review time once again and yesterday I finally got around to seeing Central Intelligence so now I’m gonna talk about it here! 🙂

So the story for this film can be described as the following:

“Calvin Joyner, a mild-mannered accountant is lured into the world of international espionage after he reconnects with an old friend, Bob Stone aka Robbie Wheirdicht from high school through Facebook.”

This film’s story was pretty good, and more importantly funny. As some of you may know I’m a fickle guy when it comes to comedies and I’m always pleasantly surprised when I am able to not only laugh a lot but also enjoy the story too, and I believe Central Intelligence did that for me. I liked about this film’s story was:

  1. There was a little more to it than what the trailers showed off.
  2. There was some depth to the story when it came to the relationship between the two lead characters.
  3. I liked the pop culture references especially with the use of other films, music or other verbal jokes.
  4. It was ridiculous but had enough emotional moments to ground it realism to a degree.

This film was all sorts of ridiculous and that is always my kind of jam, though there were a few things I wanted to nitpick. There were a few things that happened in this film that felt like they were dealt with fairly quickly or not reserved in a realistic manner. Plus the film follows some of the standard story beats that come with comedy films, however, this didn’t overly detract from my enjoyment of the film.

When it comes to the cast, they all did a great job. Firstly there’s Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson as Calvin “Golden Jet” Joyner and Bob Stone/Robbie Wheirdicht, both actors did fantastic jobs in their roles individually and together as well. Hart was essentially the same guy he’s been in most of his recent films being loud, crazy and funny, and while Hart’s style of humour and charisma can be a little overbearing and tiresome at times, it worked fort his film. And Johnson, he was just fabulous and reason I loved him so much was that his character allowed Johnson to show off his acting skills. This kind of material is in Johnson’s wheelhouse but it was also different at the same time, and what I mean by that is Johnson is an action star and has good comedic skills too, but to see him switch between these styles so often with different personas was really interesting and once again shows that he’s come far as an actor since he started how many years ago. And of course Hart and Johnson have great chemistry, and they played well off of each other. The rest of the cast was also good with Amy Ryan doing a good job as the blunt Agent Pamela Harris, Danielle Nicolet was also very nice and cute as Maggie Joyner, Thomas Kretschmann had a nice appearance as The Buyer and Jason Bateman as Trevor, damn what a great part he had to play in this film. But my absolute favourite part of this film was with Aaron Paul as Phil, I won’t say when or why he’s in the film, but he was such incredible and had one line that just made me giddy. 😀

As for the presentation it was pretty good, I really enjoyed the action was it was cool, over the top and well-choreographed when it came to the firefights and hand-to-hand combat. And the soundtrack was great with some great music choices from the 90’s and the film score from Theodore Shapiro and Ludwig Göransson was nice as well.

So in conclusion Central Intelligence was a lot of fun and heck of lot better than some critics lead me to believe, I mean I knew I’d like this film because of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart but it was just so delightful and hilarious that I ended up having a damn good time. It wasn’t super consistent with the humour and I had a few nitpicks with the story, but overall I had a good session with this film and I recommend it for sure.

Rating: 7.5/10

So have you seen Central Intelligence and if so what did you think of it? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below and I’ll see y’all on the next review! 😀

Great review, I thought the film was very funny too, especially considering a lot of the reviews I read didn’t give it a good write up. Johnson in particular was brilliant.

Thanks, and yeah I totally agree, the reviews I saw made this film sound average/bad but I was so surprised about how much I enjoyed it! 😀
