Get Hard Review

04 Apr

Howdy ladies and gents, today I give you my second review of the day in the form of Get Hard. I actually saw this film before the awesomeness that is Furious 7, but I didn’t feel like talking about this film until after I got that other review done. I knew that this film could go one of two ways, it could either be really funny or really pants, so which one is it? Well read on and find out.

As for the plot it can be summarised as the following:

“When millionaire James King is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.”

In a way the story did turn out the way I expected, however there were some things I didn’t see coming and it isn’t exactly good or bad as it is just there. A lot of what happens in is painfully dull, average, cliché and lacking in fun or originality. That being said I did have fun with this film to a degree. The whole premise of the film, the dialogue and jokes are stupid, it is silly, rude and kind of childish and some of that was quite funny, but these moments of fun are drowned out by all of the less than stella humour.

When it comes to the cast, the performances vary from being good to average. Will Ferrell as James King was fine, Ferrell was just being himself and to be honest he provided some of the better humour. Kevin Hart as Darnell Lewis was good too, Hart like Ferrell was pretty much being himself and the dude is loud, crazy and all over the place, I reckon he was the best part of this film because his energy was always on high. Then there’s Alison Brie as Alissa, Brie I love for her work on Community and it also helps that she is one of the cutest/prettiest women ever and here she was pretty good. Alissa is a very selfish, sassy, superficial and hot lady who is together with James, but only really cares for the lavish lifestyle he can provide for her. This is a very different kind of role I’ve seen from Brie, the character is fairly mean and very unlike some of her other roles, but I like she handles herself and this is probably the biggest film I’ve seen her in so I hope she does get more exposure. Craig T. Nelson as Martin Barrow was fine, Edwina Findley was good as Rita Lewis and while T.I.’s role as Russell was a bit generic for a black rapper, T.I. did well and was fun to watch.

In conclusion Get Hard is an okay time, the film is absurdly silly with its story and humour and that is the film’s best and worst aspect. For every funny moment there’s a lot of unfunny moments too, Ferrell and Hart make for an interesting duo, but overall if you were to ask me on a movie night whether I’d want to watch this, I would say pass because there are much better comedies than this.

Rating: 5.5/10 (Kind of fun and forgettable)

So have you seen Get Hard and if so what did you think of it? Please  be sure to leave you comments below and I’ll see ya on the next review. Laters! 😀

Hart and Ferrell are usually hilarious in everything, but here, they were trying a tad too hard. Nice review.
