Scarlett Johansson Has a ‘Very Big’ Role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Solo Film Teased

13 Feb

Howdy again ladies and gents, time for the second bit of Marvel film news today. After talking about Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch costume now we move onto the future of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The following info comes from superherohype:

“When Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits the big screen on April 4, it will mark Scarlett Johansson’s third big screen appearance as Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff. That will soon be followed by a fourth, Avengers: Age of Ultron, in 2015. According to Total Film’s new interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige (via Comic Book Movie), the much-anticipated sequel will feature a “very big” role for the character. What’s more, he teases that a Black Widow solo film may be the next step for the character.

“We learn more about her past,” Feige says of the Joss Whedon sequel, “and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”

Of course, Black Widow is going to first have to make it through the events of The Winter Soldier, which Feige promises is a game-changer for the MCU.

“We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film,” Feige continues.“We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of ‘Winter Soldier’ than it is at the beginning. Therefore, when we meet the Avengers at the top of ‘Age of Ultron,’ it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the first film. Partially that’s because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed. Each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally they get together for a big event or crossover series, they part again, and then they come back together again.”

So Feige basically tells us that Black Widow is getting fleshed out a bit more and due to the details of her past it could make for a solo film? Nice. I’m down with that. My only concern would be whether Johansson would be committed to the character enough to go beyond Avengers 2 and star in any more films as she doesn’t look as interested in her role as say Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans or mainly any of the other major Avengers co-stars. I’m not saying that she doesn’t care at all, I’m just concerned that she may jump ship after a while and get superhero fatigue. I would like to think that she would love her fanbase enough to stick around a little longer.

As for Feige’s other comment I am really interested to see how the MCU changes over the course of the next two films and whether the tone and atmosphere will really be THAT different from what we recall from 2012. The people are Marvel really will have to amp up the danger and crisis factor by 10 if they want some notable change to be seen and felt. It all sounds very exciting, I just hope things work out and keeps us fans guessing.

Really looking forward to Johansson getting more to do as I think she’s been quite strong so far in the role. Hopefully she’ll want to stay in the Marvel Universe for a while because she’ll be getting paid loads of money and it’ll give her the freedom to choose other films as and when she wants.
