The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer #1 Review

05 Dec

Howdy people, time to review another trailer and today’s the one that loads of people have been waiting a long time for, it is of course the next big live action Spidey adventure, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now I have been cautiously looking forward to this sequel for a while now, there’s been both things I’ve liked and hated in the promotional imagery and casting revolving this film. So now we have a trailer, is it looking good or not? Read on to fight out my thoughts.

Take a look at the trailer below:

Okay, my first initial thoughts after seeing this trailer?… THIS. IS. AWESOME!

Now check it out, if you’ve been following this blog for a while then you know I wasn’t too much of a fan of TASM last year, it has some interesting new visuals, a good cast and new twists on the classic tale. But in the end the film fell a bit flat in the whole “new” department, didn’t really divulge the “untold story” and showed too much in its marketing trailers.

But this trailer, this trailer is what I’m talking about. I’m seeing the kind of Spider-Man film that I’ve wanted for a while now which is serious, reflective of the comics and has some proper danger, drama and urgency.

So what the trailer so good? I think it is just the tone. Everything feels realistic like the last film, but rather than feeling all gritty and serious just for the lack of it, in this film there is a real sense that shit is gonna hit the fan, like a bomb that’s slowly ticking away and then explodes everywhere!

So what’s going on with the story? Well from what I can gather Peter’s still being Spider-Man, continuing his relationships with Gwen Stacy and trying to find out what happened with his parents and how it ties to Oscorp. Seems like Oscorp may be the central hub for the creation of several of the new villains including Electro, Rhino and the Green Goblin. Harry Osborn is working for his father behind the shadows. Electro plays a big part as the villain in this film, ready to wreck shit up for not only Spider-Man, but the rest of New York.

As for the characters here we see a more mature Peter Parker who is aware of the world around him, he knows that for the good stuff he does, there is danger lurking in the shadows. Parker is still on the hunt for the mystery behind his parents while still having fun with Gwen Stacy, but is also got new enemies coming out of the woodwork left, right and center and its awesome! We also got to see our first proper look at Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn and while I wish he had a look closer to the comics, I still like where this film is going with his character and how tightly connected he is to the chaos unfolding with the villains and Oscorp and of course, his father Norman. In this trailer we didn’t really get a sense for what’s going on with Emma Stone as Gwen and how all this affects her world outside seeing Peter, so I’m curious to see how she fits into the story. We also didn’t see that much in the way of Jamie Foxx’s Electro besides a few clips here and there, he looks fine, although his CGI looks a bit questionable at times (probably because its not finished yet).

Like the first film I like the sense of scope you get, New York seems so much bigger, wider and vivid than before, so when destruction goes down you can feel it like in The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises. And speaking of the destruction, the action in this film looks great. So much chaos! Spidey’s web-slinging is as swift and intricate as ever with slow motion bullet dodging and everything else. The visual effects looks so clean, fluid and vivid, and I’m liking the choreography, ESPECIALLY that scene at the end where Spidey is swinging through that power plant dodging Electro’s attacks, that just screamed of awesomeness to me.

Now let’s briefly talk about the ties to the prior source material. This film looks like it’s still combining the Amazing and Ultimate series of comics and blending them together. But the other big thing that I got a feeling for was The Spectacular Spider-Man, TSSM is one of my favourite TV shows ever and is one of the best/if not THE best adaptation of Spider-Man in any media. For some reason with all the subtle movements of new characters, danger and action sequences, I was getting a lot of vibes from the former Spidey show and that to me is always a good thing. 🙂

In conclusion The Amazing Spider-Man 2 looks surprisingly awesome and a HELL of a lot better than the last film. Only time will tell whether this film can deliver the goods, but right now I’m liking what I’m seeing a lot and it does have the potential to be the best Spider-Man film ever. I just hope that there’s an equal mount of screen time for all the characters, that the story is consistent and doesn’t from a plot point halfway through and that the film is at least true to the source material and doesn’t give us some cop-out bullshit.

So what do you think of TASM2 trailer? Well your thoughts below, laters! 😀

I saw great potential in the first film even if it wasn’t brilliant, and it looks like it may finally plan out 😀

I had the same thought when I saw this trailer – THIS LOOKS AWESOME haha. Like Tim said lots of ‘oooh!’ moments when you think about the characters who are going to be introduced. The first one was just setting up the new spiderman – this is where the real action starts!! Dont want to wait until MAY though??!!
