The Conjuring Review

06 Aug

Howdy people! After just over a week away from the cinema I return from the depths for another film review, but this time its of the HORROR film The Conjuring! OHHHHHH! Well the reason this is a big deal is because I actually don’t like horror films and actively try to avoid them because I don’t like being scared in films. But since my mum and sister were going I decided to tag along because at least I wouldn’t be alone. I’d heard so many good things about this film and the hype was massive… So imagine my disappointment after the film when I’d realised that the film wasn’t all that impressive at all.

The story of the film goes a little something like this:

“In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Parren move their family into a dilapidated Rhode Island farm house and soon strange things start happening around it with escalating nightmarish terror. In desperation, Carolyn contacts the noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to examine the house. What the Warrens discover is a whole area steeped in a satanic haunting that is now targeting the Parren family wherever they go. To stop this evil, the Warrens will have to call upon all their skills and spiritual strength to defeat this spectral menace at its source that threatens to destroy everyone involved.”

I feel like the story starts out very good. There was a good amount of focus on not only the Parren family but also on the Warren couple too, that balance was handled nicely. I loved the story surrounding Ed and Lorraine Warren and their paranormal adventures, it was some interesting and cool stuff. And the initial point when the crazy haunting activities start to begin its there where the film gets you hooked in and freaks you out because you don’t know what’s coming. However once the main threat is revealed and the last third of the film kicks in that’s where the film loses steam and falls into the category of ‘been there, seen that’, you know? And that really bugged me. It was original, intense and creepy, but in the third act the film just lost its scare factor and if a horror film isn’t scary then why does it exist?

When it comes to the cast I have no problems with them at all, they were all solid and put in some great performances. Vera Farmiga was wonderful as Lorraine Warren putting in a very convincing, chilling and dramatic performance. While Patrick Wilson was great as Ed Warren, his character was. Both Farmiga and Wilson had great chemistry and on-screen presence. Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston were good as Carolyn and Roger Perron, their characters were obviously at the center of all this chaos at the supernatural happenings start taking place and I liked their work in their roles too. Even all the child actors were good and not that annoying kind you find in most films.

In conclusion The Conjuring while it had the look and tone of a good horror film and a good cast, I just didn’t find it all that scary and that’s the problem. While I’m not a fan of being scared shitless in horror films, if a film is meant to be scary then I want it to SCARE me and this film failed in that regard. I’m probably in the minority who didn’t overly enjoy this film but yeah if you’re horror fan you’ll probably find an entertaining experience with this film.

Rating: 6/10 (Not nearly as scary or as impressive as I was expecting)

So have any of you lot of there seen The Conjuring and if so what are your thoughts on it? Was it the horror film you were looking for or was it another unimpressive attempt at this genre of film? Whatever your views are drop them in the comments below.

Good review. Can’t say I was petrified by this flick, but it definitely did allow me to have a bit of fun and jump as well.

Thanks for commenting yo, I thought the film looked great and was filmed well and had a good cast, but otherwise it didn’t do anything for me.
