Mary Jane Won’t Appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Role Pushed to Third Film

Alrighty then time to talk about some news in the world of superheroes and today we have some interesting stuff coming from the upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The following info comes from superherohype:

MAry Jane Spider_man_2_Shailene Woodley

“Some of the first images to come from the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set were of actress Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, and now it appears that footage won’t be seen in the upcoming sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (thanks to SHH user ‘fuflipflops’), Woodley confirmed that her character will be cut out of the second movie and won’t appear until the third film in the series.

“Of course I’m bummed,” said the actress. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”

“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” said director Marc Webb in a statement. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

The third and fourth films in the franchise were recently dated for release in 2016 and 2018, respectively. What do you think of Mary Jane not appearing in the upcoming film? Sound off below!

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opening May 2, 2014, for Peter Parker (Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.”

Wow, okay well this is definitely a surprise. After all, Shailene Woodley was announced to be in this film ages ago and now for us to find out that she’s not gonna be in the film after all this filming and set pictures is kind of random and silly on Marvel and Sony’s part. But at the same time this could be a good thing.

So what do you think could be the reasoning behind this? I have some theories like:

  1. This has something to do with the death of Gwen Stacy possibly taking place in this film (possibly the third) and so she’s being pushed back into the third film.
  2. Maybe Mary Jane plays a bigger role in the next film instead.
  3. The film is too crowded so the filmmakers are pushing her back into the third film instead.
  4. The filmmakers actually have no use for her and have just decided to get rid of her.

Well those are my theories. in truth TASM2 was starting to get too bloody crowded with all the characters that were being announced over the last few months, and MJ is a vital character to the source material so its better to give her more breathing space in another film in order to make sure that justice is done to her character. While I’m gutted for Woodley at the same time I think this may benefit the film in the long run.

Hahahahahaha. Joker. Honestly I really wish they’d picked another actress for this role, MJW is one of the hottest comic book female characters and I don’t feel like this actress is the right fit. But hey we’ll see what happens in 2016 when TASM3 hits in the cinema right? XD
