Howdy ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Day #14 of my Month of Superhero Film Reviews! During this month I’ll be reviewing of some of the best and worst comic book adapted films. Now I’m going to tackle one of the worst superhero films that’s come out in the last 10 years, fans hate it and so did most critics when it came out too. I am of course talking about the failure that is Ghost Rider.
Man this is lame, I’ve actually seen this film more times than I should have and the last time was within the last year and now I have to do it again. Man I put up with a lot of crap for you lot lol! This film is now infamous for destroying the Ghost Rider character not once, but twice! So let’s talk about the first one.
In terms of the plot you have Johnny Blaze, a stunt motorcyclist who gives up his soul to the devil to become a hellblazing vigilante known as Ghost Rider, now with his new powers he has to fight against the power-hungry demon Blackheart who is the son of the devil himself.
The story sounds good one paper, but the way it is handled is with a bit too much humour and not enough focus on the serious nature of Johnny Blaze’s situation and his deal with Mephistopheles. Now I know that all of this kind of stuff is a bit crazy and beyond the basic superhero conventional stuff, but I feel like if this film had good writers who would have been able to made the film easier for audiences to understand than it would have turned out much differently. Instead we have a film that is pretty much a comedy with dark elements here and there, except it’s really stupid.
Now let’s talk about the cast. I didn’t care for them. Firstly we have Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider. Let’s get this out of the way first, he was the wrong choice for this character from the beginning and as the film progresses Cage gets worse and worse. I guess he did his best with the material he was given but I still didn’t like him that much. Eva Mendes as Roxanne Simpson didn’t fare that much better, she was pretty to look at but I didn’t believe in the relationship that going on between her and Johnny, the chemistry wasn’t there. And there’s Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles, nothing against Peter Fonda but this was not the character I knew from the comics, this was a watered-down and campy version that was rubbish, end of. The same can be said for Wes Bentley as Blackheart, while he was more active than Fonda, he still came across as someone so boring and cliché. And lastly Sam Elliott as Carter Slade/Caretaker, Elliot was a combination of two characters and I while he served his purpose he was kind cheesy and pointless.
Now let’s talk about the presentation. Visually the film is decent, the CGI works for the most part. Ghost Rider looks nice and his first transformation sequence is great but his skull head looks way too small for his body. As for the other characters they all look a bit cheap and fake, like they belong on those sort of fantasy/supernatural TV shows from the 90s. Then there’s the soundtrack and it is handled by Christopher Young, I guess that makes two unremarkable soundtracks he’s done now (Spider-Man 3 is the other one if you weren’t paying attention).
And lastly how does it compare to the comics? There were a few elements kept intact like character names and Ghost Rider’s uniform and bike, but other than that so many problems emerged. This film killed the source material in ways that shouldn’t have been possible. The character of Mephistopheles was BUTCHERED and what in the holy mother of heck did they do to Blackheart too? The comics really had this epic, dark, supernatural feel to it along with its creepy and demonic characters and to see them nerfed so badly and reduced to silly humans with special effects used to show that they’re really monsters was pretty weak.
So to conclude Ghost Rider is just a bad film, it has tiny moments of interest, but it’s just covered it too much crap to notice. The film’s story is pretty basic and lame, the script is weak, the cast especially with Nic Cage are lame and I dunno what else to say because but this film is bad in ways that I can’t even begin to describe. Just stay away from this film if you know what’s good for ya!
Rating: 4/10 (This film just makes me angry because how it tarnished the comic character)
