So following that quite troubling news concerning The Avengers 2 regarding the issues with the cast and their financial disputes, we now have some new information regarding some of Marvel’s other comic book properties that may see the light of day in the future. The following information comes from IGN:
“Buried within a news story about Robert Downey Jr.’s contract negotiations for The Avengers 2 and 3 is a revelation about other possible Marvel projects in the pipeline.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Marvel has a writing program it uses as a concept generator and has scripts for Blade and Ms. Marvel features, for example. Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Black Panther and The Runaways are other projects on the horizon. The company slowly has been reacquiring licenses to characters it lost during the 1990s, snapping up Blade, Ghost Rider, Power Man and Daredevil in the past year alone.”
Marvel came close to moving forward with a Runaways movie a few years ago before shelving it late in the game. The studio’s development of Doctor Strange and Black Panther movies is well known, but the real revelations in this news is that Marvel has even developed scripts for a Ms. Marvel feature and a Blade reboot, and that they’ve also reclaimed the screen rights to Power Man.
For a long time, the screen rights to Power Man (Luke Cage) and his partner Iron Fist were held by different studios, but with them now back in the Marvel fold there’s a better chance than ever that we could see the Heroes for Hire together onscreen.”
Okay so this is good new right? Hearing about new Marvel comic book material that could be adapted into films is always interesting. Now let me just say beforehand that since Doctor Strange is already confirmed there’s no need to talk about him. Let’s just talk about the new properties.
While a Ms. Marvel film would be great especially since we’d see a new female superhero film, I’d much rather see what would happen with Power Man and Iron Fist. While I’ve never read any of the comics I’ve seen them in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and they seemed like an awesome pairing, they totally need a film. I could easily see it being like a superhero version of Lethal Weapon or another buddy cop film but instead the average scenarios would be much cooler due their super powers.
As for Blade I would love to see the character make another film appearance, it needs to be done, however there are two problems with that: 1) Under Disney I highly doubt that they’d allow such a violent version of the character and story to be released because of its family friendly nature. As for 2) I like many other people LOVED Wesley Snipes as the character and we think that he’s the main man for the job, but obviously its been long since he played the character, he’s just gotten out of jail recently and he’s clearly aged, I just don’t think he’d be able to do the role again.
As for Black Panther Marvel need to stop messing around get that film made, it was referenced as far back as in Iron Man 2 and fans demand a film adaptation. There are plenty of good black male actors to choose from and it wouldn’t be nearly as difficult to pull off as some of the stuff that Marvel have brought out and will continue to make over the next two years. And lastly when it comes to Runaways I think that’d be a really cool, interesting and different kind of Marvel film to make and from that source material they could easily make a series of films from it. The only issue is that it’s not overly well-known unless you’re a fan of the source material, but if Marvel continue with their introduction of unknown properties then Runaways could be some really awesome stuff with the right director and writers.
