Man of Steel Trailer #3 Review

17 Apr

Alrighty then here we are in April and Man of Steel is set to come out in 2 months so what better time to bust out a new trailer. Now as you might have seen across the internet there’s been a lot of news, images and new footage showing up for this film and I haven’t been blogging about it. There’s a reason for that. Up until now as much as I’d like to see a good new Superman film, nothing Man of Steel has shown me so far has gotten me overly excited. But now we have this trailer and for the first time I’m genuinely feeling hyped up. Check out this beastly trailer below:

We open the trailer with a familiar scene to those who know Superman’s origin story, the destruction of Krypton and seeing baby Superman being set off in his space pod to Earth. This new version is nicely handled and features some lovely dialogue like when Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer) says “They’ll kill him.” to which Jor-El (Russell Crowe) replies “How?” That was just some sweet ass dialogue yo. So then we cut to a lot of scenes we’ve seen before in regards to shots of Clark when he’s younger running around with his cape to the scene when he saves the kids on the bus. And then there’s this lovely scene between young Clark and his foster-father Jonathan Kent where Clark discovers his alien origins. We also get a voiceover from Louis Lane (Amy Adams) where it sounds like she’s possibly looking for Superman and states that he’s been moving from place to place and has performed acts and feats that’s made people aware of his presence. and then after a nice monologue from Jor-El with footage of Superman in the icy location the cool stuff starts to kick in.

There’s also scenes of the city of Metropolis is under attack and there’s all these big ass alien stuff causing havoc and we even get to finally hear Michael Shannon as General Zod and he sounds epic. “I WILL FIND HIM!” Jesus, no that’s the sound of a man on mission and Shannon sounds almost as scary as he is in Boardwalk Empire. We also get to see Superman fly around, save people, get taken prisoner and get interrogated by Lois  Lane we she asks him about the ‘S’ on his chest and he’s that it isn’t an ‘S’ and it is at this point where she’s about to call him Superman but it cut off by the man in question. And then just in the last part Superman seems to be dealing the damage to someone in some high-speed punching in the air and that was sweets as hell.

Even though there’s still a very emphasis on Superman’s origins, he’s alienation from the human and all that talk of him being a saviour, there is also a lot of action and that’s what I’ve been looking for. For a while I’ve wanted to see what kind of cool ass stuff Superman could do in this film and what kind of threats he’d face and finally we get glimpses of that here. Superman seems pretty damn fast, way faster than before and literally moves from places to place at a speed where if you blink you’d probably miss him! And that is cool. Visually some of these action scenes, sequences and set pieces look insane! But since it’s a Zack Snyder film that’s to be expected. I’m loving the scale of all this destruction and chaos going down, it looks just as big as the New York invasion in The Avengers!

I guess the only thing I didn’t like about the trailer was the music, it came across a bit lame and didn’t have that right sound to it. I mean some could argue it has some degree of epicness, hope and maybe even a heroic side to it. But for me it came across a bit meh, it was just there and a little bit cheesy.

Overall this is the first thing I’ve seen since the teaser trailer that’s actually makes me want to watch the film. Man of Steel is finally looking like a badass Superman film that I’d want to watch, I just hope that it’s ‘grounded and realistic’ approach doesn’t take too much away from the comic book source material, I don’t need another Dark Knight styled film.

Love it, looks amazing! I had the same feeling about the music but after seeing it about 40 times to do my review it is growing on me big time, I actually miss not hearing it 😀

This films budget feels way higher than it actually is, comparison for example the Avengers cost $240M, this was $175M. Zack Snyder can do anything with visuals 😀

I see what you’re saying, I’ve watched the trailer only twice but I can see the music starting to get a hold of me. And in terms of the budget I am surprised, but again this is Zack Synder, if the film doesn’t look amazing then something’s wrong in the universe.
