Oh snap, shit’s just gone down in the world of comic book films again! Just when I thought the future couldn’t get any more interesting I then hear that the Fantastic Four will be rebooted with the director of Chronicle with a release date too! Damn! Here’s the original article from superherohype:
“Twentieth Century Fox Film has set a March 6, 2015 release for Chronicle director Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot. No other films are scheduled for that date yet.
Michael Green and Jeremy Slater wrote the script for the new film.
The 2005 Fantastic Four and 2007 sequel Rise of the Silver Surfer were directed by Tim Story and starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.
In related news, Fox also announced that The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters will all be 3D releases.”
While it was reported ages ago that Josh Trank was attached to this new Fantastic Four film he wasn’t letting the cat out of the bag any time soon, but now it’s official and it’s frigging awesome. Josh Trank did great in his directorial debut with Chronicle and I can instantly see the possibilities of what he could bring to this new Fantastic Four film. Of course most of us Marvel fans can recall those horrible Fantastic Four films from 2005 and 2007 which really did destroy the mythology and family connection between the main heroes, the only saving grace about those films was Chris Evans as Johnny Blaze. The Fantastic Four has needed another live action appearance for a while and in my opinion they need to be introduced to the world properly.
Marvel and Fox can surely do better than this right?
What we could get with this new reboot is an actual story full of drama, emotion, action and cohesiveness. Also important to this reboot would be having a proper version of the Fantastic Four, a team who are a family who have to rely on each other, who obviously will have moments of conflict, but also moments of resolution too. I also hope to get a much more serious interpretation of these characters especially after all that silly humour in the previous films. Superhero films and the world of cinema has changed a great deal since 2005 and there is a great deal of source material to work with, in addition to that there’s also films to take influence from too. I hope the script is up to scratch and I pray to god that the filmmakers take a few notes from Pixar’s The Incredibles, a film that wasn’t even Marvel-related and yet did the whole “superhero team” thing a hell of a lot better when it comes to story, use of character powers, action sequences and an epic soundtrack.
The people at 20th Century Fox and Marvel need to take notes!
Well the announcement has been made, I just hope the pre-production process goes well and we get something solid and creative that will rectify the mistakes of the past and give us something amazing. 2015 is gonna be an interesting year, The Avengers 2, Star Wars Episode VII and now the Fantastic Four reboot too. Sweet! 😀
